ValUShops, a Midday Advertiser Group company, was suspended by eBay
Thursday, March 22, 2007 for "infringement of trademark and copyright"
of the Cc brand for fraudulent listings placed under the ValUShops eBay
ID by hackers apparently working from within the eBay auction platform.
An ongoing investigative series centered on this bayhacking began the
following day at the main Midday news site Midday.ws
and also appears for comment at MiddayBLOG.com
and on the affected company's site, ValUShops.com.
The Midday News (Midday.com) has created a new website BayHACK.com
on March 26, 2007 for archiving all investigative coverage and public
response from those auction sellers, buyers, and participants directly
or indirectly bayhacked on eBay North America and on eBay, Inc.
international sites. An additional backup reserve domain, BayHACKED.com
, will re-direct to the new site.
All aspects of eBay performance at all levels will be covered.
(Hartford,
CT - USA) Sunday saw renewed internal hacking when eBay
seller cp254100, a long-time eBay Woodbridge, VA member since October
9, 2001, had their identity snatched when 82 phantom listings were
placed for auction under the cp254100 auction ID. Total auction value
was $4,836.36 when surreptitiously listed at 12:12 pm PDT. The
listings’ sub-titles appeared as ******New
Authentic *Chanel* Purse /Handbag / Bag****** with variations
including the premium brand lines of Gucci, CHLOE, and Louis Vuitton.
The auction grouping with a retail market value of $57,000 to $131,000
was still active as of 11:30 pm EST Sunday evening, minus one sale.
eBay seller racejunkie242004, a previous business identity victim (See
Midday March 25th Investigative Report below), is now ignominiously
listed by eBay as “no longer a registered user.”
PayPal, an eBay company, notified Midday Saturday that the
company’s four other accounts, Fanfairs - the auction arm for
Fanfairs.net, ShopSITES - Midday’s print advertiser internet
extension, and ValueAndMoreForLess - Midday’s free domestic
USA shipping auction portal, were all inaccessible due to
eBay’s unannounced change of passwords (See March 23rd Midday
Revised Report below). Midday marketing plans for the quarantined
accounts had called for a coordinated marketing kickoff effort
beginning in the third quarter of 2007 but will now be delayed while
other venues are evaluated..
A Midday ValUShops eBay buyer who had placed a purchase on one of the
Cc brand pocketbooks, before the hacker listing could be pulled,
offered this comment, “... I'm wondering if this
bag was made of genuine leather, not leather-like, because I had such a
bad experience on eBay a couple of weeks ago ...”
Worse than any negative publicity that arises from eBay’s
heavy-handed treatment of bona-fide and dedicated income-producing
sellers, victimized by eBay’s apparent inability to stop the
identity hacking, will be the word-of-mouth comments of disaffected
eBay buyers making simple decisions to shop and seek services elsewhere.
Countless USA sellers are still chafing at the fee increases eBay
enacted in the first quarter of this year. Previous fee increases in
eBay Australia saw thousands of sellers abandon their eBay stores.
The pressures on profit are slowly showing up in eBay’s
stagnating stock value, now on a gradual decline. The eBay response to
inside hacking merely amounts to an indifferent bid proxy for
auctioning off more of its bottom line.

stock value is down from $34.00 one month ago Friday as charted above
for the February 23rd - March 23rd performance period..
In a followup visit done Monday at 2:30 pm EST March 26th, eBay listed
victimized seller cp254100 as, “No longer a registered
user.”
All of the bayhacked seller accounts examined by Midday to date, showed
100% positive feedback score ratings.

Counterfeit Auctions Continue At eBay Replicas
of Pricey Cc Brand Pocketbooks Sold As
“Authentic” Originals - Buyers & Sellers
BayHacked
The
Midday News Investigative Report Updated 0800 Hours GMT, 25/03/07
Hackers
working from within the eBay system had placed at least 957 new bogus
listings up for auction as discovered by Midday in performing an 8:30
pm EST item search on the eBay website Saturday evening. Total auction
value was over $55,000 USD, a fraction of the estimated actual market
value of $670,000 to over one and a half million dollars normal retail
($1.5 million USD). The Cc brand high-end womens’ accessory
can retail for $700 to $1,600 and is a highly sought after fashion
statement and status symbol.
One victimized eBay seller, racejunkie242004 of Amery, Wisconsin, who
infrequently offers racing knickknacks and souvenirs, had 75 bogus Cc
CHLOE handbag listings up for auction as of 3:00 pm EST Saturday. The
one-day BayHack, unknowingly placed at 8:30 pm PST on Thursday, March
23rd, had a total auction value of $4,424.25 USD. Ebay wiped out all
the remaining racejunkie242004 listings just before 10:00 pm EST
Saturday, about an hour and a half before they were scheduled to
expire. The racejunkie242004 account had 16 Cc CHLOE sales from 3:00 to
9:40 pm. EST

Noticeable
as a possible clue on how the hackers are infiltrating eBay was the use
of a listing design template only available from Auctiva.com, an eBay
partner site, which offers separate, free, standalone websites that
list sellers’ auction items linked back into eBay. Also
curious was that all the Cc listings had a gift icon indicating that
shipping could be made to an address other than the billing address.
Previously suspended eBay Powerseller RoadPal (see March 23rd Midday
Report) was back in operation today with a fully functional store.
Email requests sent to Bill Cobb, President of eBay North America and
Meg Whitman, President of eBay, Inc.asking for comment have gone
unanswered..
The
Midday News Revised Report Updated 1000 Hours GMT, 23/03/07
Early
in the afternoon on Thursday, the owner of auction seller ValUShops, an
eBay Store, discovered the account had been hacked for the second time
in 5 days. ValUShops is the main auction merchandising company for the
Midday Advertiser Group, the marketing arm of The Midday News. At 7:19
am EST Thursday, hackers working within the eBay system placed 87 fixed
price replica listings for the Coco (Cc) handbag line in the ValUShops
account for a total auction value of $5,120.82. Listing fees due eBay
totaled $2,910.15.
The ValUShops 18 digit alpha-numeric password was changed immediately
at about 1:55 pm for the second time this week. The only eBay published
phone number, an eBay Store dedicated line, brought a hapless response
from Stacy, an eBay support specialist, who said only Live Help
Security could resolve the matter.
Live Help Support’s window popped up with a note saying there
was a backup and to wait for a customer service representative. From
3:10 pm until 6:10 pm EST, no eBay Live Help security contact of any
sort occurred. Ebay Live Help Support’s schedule is 6 am to 2
pm PST.
It appeared initially that the one day listings could be left to expire
on their own with about 12 hours left, until orders started coming in
at about 7:10 pm EST. Immediate efforts were started to end each
auction listing manually which was completed at 9:55 pm, but not in
time to prevent 17 buyer auction orders totaling $1,000.62 from coming
into the ValUShops account.
During the day, hackers used eBay’s Ask The Seller internal
mail system to send out 30 emails under the ValUShops name soliciting
other eBay sellers to visit the www.zhmarket666.com website
(zhmarket666@hotmail.com). This was a repeat of what had occurred
previously on Sunday (see below). It is unclear as to what the
hackers’ motives are other then to maliciously disrupt a
major worldwide computer system and to possibly hone hacking skills for
bigger and more secure systems; income from product sales would only go
to the sellers, but - Catch 22 - the sellers
don’t have the actual product.
In doing an eBay search on variations of the keyword-laden title used
in the massive scam, @@New Authentic Cc Purse /Handbag /
Bag@####03#, over a thousand references initially appeared.
One group of 445 Cc listings was placed in the account of RoadPal,
another eBay Store at approximately 4:55 pm, EST, late Thursday, with a
total auction market value of over twenty-six thousand dollars ($26,000
USD). Maximum insertion fees accruing to eBay from RoadPal, a seller of
electronics and accessories, would be slightly over $14,800 USD.
Both ValUShops and RoadPal had 100% positive eBay Feedback, a system of
dependability, trustworthiness, and selling performance measurement
used by eBayers to make buying decisions. ValUShops is a member of
Square Trade. RoadPal, a member of eBay for a relatively short time
since January 8, 2006, has a remarkable record of achieving 100% of
positive feedback on 7,951 auction transactions.
At approximately 10 pm, EST Thursday, eBay suspended ValUShops and
cleared the account of its own legitimate listings for
“infringement of trademark and copyright” of the Cc
brand. All of the RoadPal account listings, legitimate and otherwise,
were purged, but an empty eBay Store remains; RoadPal was an eBay
Powerseller, while ValUShops was not.
Bill Cobb, President of eBay North America, and Meg Whitman, president
of eBay, were not available for comment as we went to press.

Massive
spam shot of 'Storm Trojan' reaches record proportions
April 12, 2007 (Computerworld)
-- A massive spam outbreak that tries to trick recipients into opening
a file attachment that can hijack their computers has already broken
records, security companies said today.
According to researchers at Postini Inc., the spam run is the largest
in the last 12 months, and more than three times the volume of the two
biggest in recent memory: a pair of blasts in December and January.
"We're seeing 50 to 60 times the normal volume of spam," said Adam
Swidler, senior manager of solutions marketing at Postini. - STORY

HACK - FYI
You
may have bids on your auctions and not know it.
Just wanted to let you know that there is some type of glitch and all
the bids you have may not show up under your MY eBay Selling page.
I just spoke with Live about it. I have two that received bids
yesterday and they do not show up in GREEN. But if I go to the actual
auction page, it shows I do have a bid. Of course, Live says they are
working on it. So if you don't think you have any bids ... check the
actual auction page!

______________________________
From
my personal experience of around two years as a home business website
operator as well as owner, I have spent enough time learning and
unlearning. Observing other sites and constantly reading and
contributing in online forums about managing a website.
Having
a website is all about being able to draw targeted traffic to
you site. The more the traffic- betters the sales- improved
commissions. This is everyone’s ultimate goal behind running
a home business website!
Striking
a balance is the key to understanding a visitor’s
psyche and the algorithm the spiders follow. Here, we will discuss a
few important aspects of visitor’s psyche; we will
concentrate on home page only, considering it’s the first
impression. Home page is also called the index page.
Point No. 1. An
uncluttered
home
page
is the
most important criteria of all. Let the home page be clean, simply
formatted with readable font and suitable background color. Consider
all these aspects. Unusual fonts, however attractive, should be avoided
to play safe.
Point No. 2. You
should make
sure you
are
not filling up your home page with all and sundry affiliate links.
Google will, in all possibilities not rank the page as well as you want
it or expect it to. Google values content. Let your home page have
information about main theme of the site. Try to cover as many aspects
or points connected with your main theme on your front page. This way
you will attract targeted traffic and move up the search engines
faster. Google will visit your site more often.
Point No. 3.
Keep
the visitor
in
mind:
While you are designing your home page or writing content for it, keep
your visitor in mind. His background, his interest, his benefit.
Instead of your designing skills, your control over the language and so
forth. Check other websites from a layman’s point of view and
see what kind of content holds your interest. Apply the same principal
for your own.
Point No. 4. Body copy
of
the
home
page
should sound easy and interesting to read. Your headline, your punch
line, everything should have an effect. At the same time -
don’t exaggerate. Don’t lie. Don’t over
emphasize. A chunk of people look at any kind of activity done on the
internet as scam. Be simple yet convincing.
Point No. 5. Let your
home
page
have
clear cut paths. If your main theme is fitness let the pages directly
connected to your home page be directly related to fitness. Like diets,
aerobics, fitness chart, yoga etc. But when a visitor clicks on your
diet page, on this new page, along with info on aerobics, you can have
a link that’s talking about free music downloads to do
aerobics at home. It’s connected and yet sort of diversifies.
But you have to be careful. Excess of these things will mar your main
theme. This will affect your Search Engine Ranking (SER).
Besides
the above, here are a few quick tips: Don’t change your home
page too often. Neither the layout, design, nor the key phrases you are
optimizing it for. While exchanging links, make sure your anchor tags
contain your main keyword. Optimize one keyword per page. Googlebot
treats each page is a separate website. So try to take time with each
page. Let each page be well optimized, interesting and informative and
complete in all respect.
